It is worth celebrating the successes of any small businesses in our community, but as a brand communications firm it is especially rewarding to monitor the success of a company who we have assisted with brand development. In particular, we wanted to commend Heather Johnston, founder of Find My Spot, for her continued success. In a demonstration of remarkable initiative, Heather left her position as a mechanical engineer for Harley Davidson to launch Find My Spot; all because she recognized a definite need for improvement to the process of finding rental units, specifically for young professionals in the midst of relocating. Find My Spot offers a unique way to match the needs of young professionals in the midst of relocating with a premium rental unit tailored for their specific need, a business plan which placed as a semi-finalist in a statewide business competition.
Heather's tenacity and motivation have been a consistent asset to building her company and brand, and it's evident to any one who has made her acquaintance her that she is incredibly driven and an exceptional leader. While employed in the corporate world, she had relocated 11 times in 13 years, and so was aware of the benefits, and the pitfalls of the process. Her experience granted insight into what was helpful as an employee being relocated, what components were necessary to successfully integrate into the community, and what areas a company could improve in the relocation process. Working with human resource department and hiring managers, Find My Spot addresses the growing market of employees in need of assistance during the relocation process, using her business acumen to help employees transition into the city.
We’ve already blogged about some of the benefits of working in collaborative spaces, exactly where Heather and Carl met. Upon discovering Carl Designs offered services that far exceeded that of a simple graphic designer, a conversation began about what brand development services the agency could offer a growing company. Upon learning of Carl’s passion for helping companies, and his process of using design as a medium for a larger conversation about how to develop a company's brand, Heather realized what an asset he could be to Find My Spot at it’s current stage of development. In the initial meeting, Carl helped solidify what the company’s purpose was, identified key stakeholders, and outlined both long term and short term goals. This type of high-level critical analysis of a company’s goals is key in the formative stages of creative direction, and is the foundation for the half-day brand audit Carl Designs offers. In the consecutive strategy sessions, Carl helped develop the brand image and color scheme, and ensure consistency across Find My Spot’s marketing and advertising materials.
Heather couldn't stress the importance of this kind of art direction. “When starting a business the perception of the brand is incredibly important. There are many different aspects of brand experiences, on marketing materials, collateral or website, and Carl helped us find a cost effective way to create a more cohesive image and brand experience,” she said.
Heather noted that one of the best benefits of working with Carl Designs is that it was refreshing to be able to work a company that still provides a personal touch, an experience she valued. “And he always gets work done when he says he will!” she noted, going to explain that he is accessible, and always very timely with feedback and suggestions.
